Adult education Lenten series - Conference Room

The hit Broadway musical Les Miserables is one of the longest running musicals in the world. Based on the epic novel by Victor Hugo, it tells the story of Jean Valjean’s quest for redemption and has inspired audiences to ponder themes of justice, poverty, freedom, love, and God’s mercy. Our Lenten series examines six of these themes, connecting them to our faith through the lives of one of the characters in the story.

Each session in our series, co-led by Angie Bateman and Brent and Cynthia Eichelberger, will include an opening DVD segment and discussion based on the book The Grace of Les Miserables by Matt Rawle. We will meet in the Conference Room at 9:00 am. Participants are asked to obtain their own copy of the book (available from Thrift Bbooks or Amazon).

Organizer for this event: Susan Strasser

Spring EcoWalk - Big Rock Forest Preserve

All are welcome to join us for our Spring EcoWalk at Big Rock Forest Preserve on Jericho Road in Big Rock. This fully accessible, intergenerational event will be held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. We will meet in the first, main parking lot off Jericho Road.

Mature woodlands, high-quality marshes, tall-grass prairie, clear-running creeks, and a 65-foot-deep lake are just some of the highlights of Big Rock Forest Preserve. Big Rock Creek, rated one of the best quality streams in Illinois, is home to freshwater mussels — indicators of high-quality habitat. High sandy bluffs overlook patches of woodlands and prairies in the preserve, and a specialized wetland called a fen is fed by underground seeps on the southeastern portion of the preserve. The FVPC EcoWalk will visit in the spring and hope to hear some frogs and toads calling.

First Sunday Breakfast - Youth Lounge

Middle school and high school youth gather for breakfast and fellowship on the first Sunday of the month in the Youth Lounge, 9:00-10:00 am. Our class time usually centers on a discussion of the Scripture verses for worship. Occasionally, we will use this time to help prepare for church-wide activities such as our pancake breakfast or Souper Bowl of Caring. The atmosphere is always relaxed and youth are welcome to join in discussions as much or as little as they are comfortable with! No advance preparation is ever needed and newcomers are always welcome.

Sunday worship and Confirmation in the Sanctuary

All are welcome to our service of Scripture, sermon, prayers, and song. This is Confirmation Sunday, when our confirmands will be formally welcomed as adult members of the church during worship.

Our service also includes a special time for the children. Children begin worship in the Sanctuary and leave with teachers during the sermon time for Sunday school. They are also welcome to worship with their families in the pews. Sound is also turned on in our Gathering Space just outside the big glass doors to the Sanctuary in case your child needs a little more space to move around during the service. A nursery is available for younger children if your family prefers that option.

Masks and socially distanced seating are optional.

Sunday School for first through fifth graders - Room 2

Sunday School for our first through fifth graders meets in Room 2, following the Children’s Time in our worship service. The Sunday School curriculum for our first through fifth grade students is based on practices Jesus did and taught us to do as faithful followers. This curriculum examines where those practices are found in the Bible and how they are used in Christian faith. During this time, children will engage in music, Bible stories, prayer, and hands-on activities while growing in faith and building relationships.

Organizer for this event: Children’s Ministries Committee.
